The pieces are crocheted and then put together. I found the pattern on Ravelry.

I was going to make mitts that matched the hat, not like her ones in the movie, because I jut don't know how to go about those...

probably quite a few...there only 5x5, so around 160 more than likely (10x16)

That's an awesome idea! I love making the squares separate, makes it very portable. I don't crochet, just knit, so maybe that's normal in crochet...
