SI portrayed on Law & Order: SVU

Hi, me again.

So I'm watching Law & Order: SVU like I do for several hours a day when I'm somewhere I can get cable TV, specifically USA! 
And then I started thinking about the times they've portrayed SI on the show...they actually show that this issue exists, and that people who do it need help. However, being a crime drama, it tends to focus on the ( Read more... )

kudos law and order!! i watch that on occasion with mom..haven't caught those episodes..but i'll keep an eye out...

I've seen like every Law and Order:SVU there is. :) I know which ones you're talking about. I was very surprised with the one in which the female had cut her chest...

I love Law and Order, and I'm just glad they try to shed light on it at all. I'm not sure what you mean when you say they over dramatize the injuries? I do agree though, that the way si-ers are portrayed is not always in an accurate light.

I mean, they focus a lot on the act and the injuries themselves and, as in the first episode I mention, overdramatize SI by using it in such a way (showing it to the jury in the courtroom, I mean.)

Focusing on the act and the injuries is a good thing for awareness though, no? I see what you're saying about the courtroom scene but also, I think that was more a way of her lawyer playing to the jury her "state of mind". Perhaps to use it as an insanity plea...

SI is horrific to people that don't understand it and Law and Order:SVU is shedding light on something people otherwise would be completely blind too.
