The Lovecats
Chapter Four: Lost
"Then why don't you do that to yourself."
I never forgot that quote. The way he said it... he was angry and fully meant it. He wasn't going to allow me to keep on being how I was and he was going to absolutely change it.
I still am shocked that was the one thing that he deplored.

"Why... I don't what?" Davey asked.
"Why you don't stop people who violate you in public. Why you let people make fun of you just because you are not the same. Why you let people walk all over you and ignore you. At the same time, when I'm around you you don't act like that and all I can say is... why, Davey? I realized something in the short time we've known each other. I love you. I hate you. I want you to stop getting people to walk on you."
Davey covered his eyes.
"What's worse is when you give a half-assed effort to do something," Jade continued, "I mean, you don't have to get so far that you hit someone or something, because that is just not you. Just say 'stop' to that teacher, say 'leave me alone' to the guys that think you're a freak. That's how I became mid-range."
Davey nodded.
"I really do like you, Davey. I really, really do. That's why I chose to look out for you. I used to be like you, dancing on the edge of overly-creepy and flirting with the catagory of 'self-destrutor'. I didn't want to be like that. I don't want you meshed with them... unless you want to be..."
"I don't want that."
"So, what d'ya say?"
"I'm going to try to be less passive and not be typed into those groups," Davey said in a calm voice. He began to babble. "God, why couldn't I be put into something like 'skater punk'? I'd fit into that... why not that..."
Jade watched as Davey tried to figure it out. He looked so adorable, pondering, his fuzzy eyebrows in a strange frame over his eyes.
Jade tried to act like he was in a movie, grabbing Davey's chin and trying to kiss him. Davey became defensive and blocked him. "Ah! Oh my God!"
Jade pulled back. "S-sorry! Sorry!"
"What was that for?!"
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to!"
Jade quickly manipulated the conversation. "See? You're already fighting back!"
"That's not the point," Davey snapped, "You kissed me. Why?"
"Because... I like you...? I don't know, Davey, I'm confused as anything. I think I fell in love with you, but I would never do that because..."
"You could have said that before."
"What? Are you gay, or bi, or something?"
"I really want to be something like that, Jade, but I can't. I got a mother who's a strict Catholic, a person that got mad at me because I wouldn't date him, and now you."
"Okay, forget it. Just forget I did anything. You fine with that?"
"Yeah... okay..." Davey sighed, rubbing his eye. Dammit... he thought. Then, somehow forgetting he had a mouth he exclaimed, "IF I WAS GOING TO BE GAY, IT MIGHT AS WELL BE HIM!"
"W...What?!" Jade yelled.
"Davey clamped his mouth. "Ohmigawd..."
"Davey," Jade started.
"I... I... hi...? Uhm... help..." Davey mumbled. "Okay. Okay. I kinda liked you from the start. You seemed so fucking awesome and... whatever to match. But I remembered that I couldn't do those things. So there. Happy?"
"You kinda liked me? Davey, you could have said something."
"You don't know who's narrow-minded and homophobic and stuff! I didn't want to be gay or anything, either! I just met you and I lost it... I'm not used to people actually wanting me that I want back."
"What's their problem? You're great, Davey. I'll prove that to you somehow."
"So what are we then?" Davey asked. "Are we 'friends'?"
"Absolutely," Jade replied. "But I'll suggest we'll start as 'friends who touch each other'. I did that with some people. We did just meet. This will be perfect because you will see if you like guys or if you feel uncomfortable."
"I like that."
"I knew you would."
Jade looked at his watch. "Shit... I gotta go..." he hugged Davey close. It became a bear hug and he even lifted Davey up. Davey screamed. "Oh, shut up," Jade said, laughing. He nuzzled Davey.
"God! Stop it! You're gonna drop me!"
"I won't drop you," Jade whispered in a low voice. "I'm not that teacher, I'm not Hunter, Adam, Mark, or any other person you know. I'm Jade. Jade Puget."
Davey nodded slowly. "O-okay..." His breath steadied and he dropped his head into Jade's shoulder. "I'm sorry I screamed rape..." he mumbled.
"It's fine. We think Hunter's a rapist."
"I'll remember that."

At dinner Penny was proud of Davey making a friend. "That Jade boy is so nice! A real sweetie! I'm happy for you, Davey! You picked up a nice guy!"
Davey blushed at the wording.
"I like Jade, too!" Mikey exclaimed.
"I'm glad..." Davey mumbled.
Penny sighed, "Davey, he wants you to be proud of him and listen to him."
"Yeah, Davey, we don't got a daddy like other people!" Mikey yelled.
"There's no need to make me a replacement," Davey snapped, "Maybe if mom got a boyfriend you could cling to him."
"There's no need to suddenly get mad, Davey," Penny murmered. "He idolizes you."
"Well, I don't want him to."
Mikey watched darkly. "Davey, I want to."
"I know you do. It's too much for me."
Silence.
"Mom, can I grow out my hair?" Davey asked.
"Uhm... how long?" Penny asked, nervous.
"I dunno. We'll see?"
"Fine."
Davey grinned.
"Can I, Mommy?" Mikey asked.
"Argh! This is what I mean!" Davey exclaimed.
"David Anthony! Cool it!" Penny screamed.
Davey slunked into his chair.
"Mikey," Penny said when she calmed down, "We'll see when you're older."
"Okay..."
Penny gave Davey a dirty look. Davey gave the "angry teen look" back to her.
Fuck you, Davey thought.

"Hello. Puget residence. Jade speaking."
"Jade? It's Davey."
"Davey! Hey! Lemme get to my phone in my room! Hang on!"
Davey heard shoes clunking and a slightly breathy Jade came back. "Hey, sweetie."
"Heh, heh," Davey snickered. "You said 'sweetie'."
"Funny. So how are you?"
"Crappy. My mom's mad at me 'cause I told my brother to fuck off. Why doesn't he go off and worship a druggie or soemthing?"
"Davey, you know better. He just wants someone in reach. Smith does tht, too. But Mikey's different... he's looking up to you in a pure way. He doesn't think you're bad. He doesn't see you wrong. He wants to write like you, too."
"How did you find out about this?"
"We talked. He opened the door. Little cutie."
"He did?"
"Yes."
There was a pause.
"What should I do?" Davey asked.
"Give him a hug, dammit. He needs one. You need to feel sorry for a kid like him."
"Okay."
"Sorry, Davey... it's just, you know, I've known people who have nothing to believe in and they commit suicide and I feel like it's my fault... I'd never like to see Mikey do that."
Davey tried to change the subject. "Jade, what should I do about my teacher?"
"Ah, that. You have to tell someone. You can't hide like a mouse."
"So...?"
"You should tell the principal."
"I'm scared..."
"I'm scared for you. I'll come with you."
"R-really?"
"Yes. It's nothing."
*******************************
Davey went to school with a cocky smirk. He combed his hair back and tried to straighten his hair. It just barely covered his ears. He wore a bandshirt and new baggy pants. He wore new Converse as well. He felt better. He saw a person leaning on his locker. "Jade?!" Davey screamed.
"Hey!" Jade said, laughing. "Uhm... don't hate me for this, but hi, St. Mary's Fairy!"
"What?!" Davey yelled, embaressed.
"I dunno... Mark used it... so I stole it..."
"Ah... not nice," Davey grumbled.
"Oh well, you're a Fairy, I'm a Ninja, it works."
"Still going to hate it for the rest of my life."
"Probably. Don't worry."
"St. Mary's Fairy," Davey mumbled, opening his locker. "Oh shit!"
His books spilled, Jade catching them. "This locker's retarded."
"Naw... that so?"
"Yeah!"
When that was over, they went to the floor and leaned on the lockers. "So, Davey... what are you going to do about the teacher?"
"I don't know..."
"Davey," Jade growled.
"I'm sorry... Davey covered his head, shuddering. "Stop yelling..."
"Hah," Jade smirked, "I make you cower in fear."
"...yes..."
"Fairy."
"SHUT UP!"
************************
"St. Mary's fairy!" Hunter squealed when Davey came to their table. Davey sighed. He gave into the nickname. It wasn't great, but oh well.
"So, Fairy, I like your hair today. I really do," Mark commented. "It's straight and we can see your eyes."
"Thanks," Davey said quietly.
Jade held him close. "I love you no matter what."
"Ew," Nick said quietly, "Don't do that."
Jade and Davey looked at each other, smiling, their code secret from them.
Jade forgot about going to the principal during the period, and Davey was half scared and half overjoyed because of it.

"Hello... calss..." Mr. D said, his voice thick with bite and venom. "Today we will be having a discussion on the summer reading book..."
Davey paled. There was a book?!
"David, is there something wrong?" Mr. D asked.
Davey looked up to him. "N-n-n-no! I... I was told to not read because I signed up to the school system late! I'm sorry!"
Mr. D sighed. "See me after class."
Oh no Davey thought.
