Sidewalks

Chapter Ten: Home

After two weeks of torture in the hospital (Jade's back was sore from sleeping on a cot to prove it,) Davey was allowed to go home. But he didn't look any better. He was tired and weak. He needed assistance moving. Jade officially lost all faith in doctors and hospitals that day. When they made it home, Jade helped Davey out. Davey looked around the home. Then he saw a bright yellow caution tape surrounded the sidewalk. "What's... goin' on?" he asked.

"Oh, they're redoing the sidewalk," Jade replied.

Davey was quite for a moment. "Really... hmm..."

He started to tug toward the sidewalk.

"Davey... what the fuck?" Jade asked.

Davey was able to tug him to the wet concrete. He looked at Jade with a misivious grin and squished at the grey substance with his sneaker. He bent down and took a stick, writing his initials. He looked at Jade. "Do it, too."

Jade squished it with his foot. Davey wrote in his initials as well. He looked at Jade and smiled. "What's the date...?"

Jade shrugged, "I dunno... just write '2005'."

Davey nodded and wrote it in. He looked at him and grinned. "There. It's going to be there forever... right?"

"Surely because the last one we kept tripping on, remember? That had to be ancient..." Jade said.

Davey slowly got up and looked at Jade. "Can I go inside?"

Jade nodded, taking another look at the sidewalk. "Sure."

"Where do we go from here?" Hunter asked.

"What?" Jade reacted.

"What happens when Davey dies? I mean, there were a few bands that have broken up when the lead singer died, like Nirvana and stuff... but then there are bands that come back like INXS or Queen or something..."

"Queen's a sham," Jade joked.

"Jade, I'm serious," Hunter said.

"I know..." Jade replied, "I'm sorry. I can't control anything anymore. Like, my emotions are out of whack... I can't do anything about Davey anymore..."

"You need a vacation," Hunter replied. "But back to business. We don't have any material to release or anything... there isn't any closure... I mean, you're a great lyricist, Jade, but Davey was the mastermind for the most part... uhm... I'm sorry..."

Jade sighed, "Hunter, you don't have to be sucking up. I know that. I absolutely am aware of that. I remember a few months ago we did a couple of acoustic things... but..."

"What?" Hunter asked.

"It doesn't feel right to just throw that stuff out there. I mean... it feels almost tacky to release stuff Davey did after he died... Davey... or AFI... is not Tupac."

Hunter had to agree. "True... what was on those tapes?"

"The songs were really personal... almost... like... well... we talked the night we did them and they kinda ended up on the tape and... they're just dear to me, Hunt. I can't let them go. They're..."

"Okay, okay, don't get all sobby on me. I'm just curious. And Adam was wondering, too. It's okay, Jade. It's okay. You are allowed to do that. I gotta go... I have stuff to do... uhm... Jade, hang in there."

"Okay," Jade replied. "G'bye, Hunt."

"...Bye," Hunter replied, hanging up.

Jade stared at the phone when he put it down. He thought about those tapes and ran to his room to play them.

The first one started off really staticy. He fast forward it a little until their voices came on. It was at the point Davey was jokingly singing The Doors for no apparent reason... Jade tried to remember why... was it on the radio that night? Possibly. He fast forward again. Then he heard chatter.

"Jade... Jade!"

"What?"

"You're going to break a string if you keep that up!"

"Look who's talking..."

Davey began to sing, "This is it, this is the end... we're all broken on the floor..."

Jade was quiet. "Dave... don't do that..."

"Don't do what?"

"Do that... morbid stuff..."

"What the hell do you expect me to sing about? Happy sunshine and fucking bunnies?"

"...uh... no..."

"I'm not changing what I am singing. Just because it rings true now... means..."

"Please, Dave..."

There was a long pause.

"You know... when they first told me I was going to die... I didn't believe them..." Davey whispered.

"I wouldn't have," Jade replied.

"It's like... when they tell you you're dying you don't believe them for, like, three months... then you live a sub-normal life and you forget you have it for, like, eight, and then the final stages set in..."

"Dave... stop."

"...oh... sorry..."

Jade shut it off. "Did you fucking know you were dying or something?!" he hissed at the recorder. "Did you fucking plan this?!"

He threw the recorder at the floor, watching it open up, spewing wires and plastic. He hoped the the tape was broken in half. He couldn't stand living in the house that someone he held dear was dying in. He couldn't stand the sounds of Davey groaning and crying, or himself groaning and crying. He grabbed the phone and called up Smith. When he heard a voice he assumed was Smith's he mumbled, "Smith... kill me."

Smith was quiet for a moment. "Yeah... sure... okay. Get some sleep and tomorrow you'll realize how foolish you are."

"Smith! This is all out of my hands now! I can't do anything!"

"Davey may be out of your hands, but your own life is still under your control. You can save yourself from being a complete moron."

"Smith... I..."

"If Davey hears you, he'll probably freak out. Don't fall apart like this, Jade. For all of our sakes."

"Smith... I..."

"Goodbye, Jade."

Smith hung up. Jade slowly put the phone back, looking around.

There sat Davey, taking deep breaths. He looked at Jade with a confused look. "You're a wreck," he whispered.

"How did you get out of bed?! Davey... you have to stay in your room!" Jade yelled.

"I crawled," Davey said, laughing. "I had to go to the bathroom, anyway."

"Oh... I see..." Jade mumbled.

Davey crawled over to the broken tape recorder. He laid on the carpet, picking from the mess. "Why'd you... do that?"

"I got mad," Jade replied.

Davey tried to find the tape. "Okay." He found the tape, which seemed to be still in one piece. "I found it."

Jade winced. "Oh... good..."

"Why don't you want it, Jade?" Davey asked.

"No reason," Jade said.

Davey laid on the carpet and yawned. "...tired."

"I'll get you back into your room," Jade said, picking him up. Davey's arms fell down Jade's back as he walked. Seemed to Jade that he just didn't have enough strength to even hold back.
