Ah, see, I am a dedicated viewer. I had to watch both series very carefully, several times in order to form an informed opinion.

Actually, I've been contemplating that a lot myself lately. I'm surprised there aren't more Gene/Ray stories around.

I have to admit, I like Gene as a person a great deal more than I like Ripley, but by the end of Blackpool I did think Ripley was awesome. I just took a while to warm up to him.

Ray's dreams: Replacing that scrawny nutter on top of the guv's manhandling list.

It's probably because of the smallness of the fandom. Obscure pairings have a difficult stand. But yeah, Gene/Ray totally makes sense. They actually seem to openly like each other before episode 7.

Gene is made more sympathetic much earlier on, while Ripley remains the sleazy bastard till the very end. I think I really began to like him on second viewing when I already knew how the story would end for him.

I'm happy to entertain.

"Blackpool" is totally worth watching, if only because of the surreal karaoke scenes. And David Tennant is hawt when he's being obnoxious. Glad you liked the caps :-)
