My mom pointed out some things when I brought up the fact that I was not only traveling across the country, but that I'd been traveling alone. Normally, there wouldn't be a problem, but I have to bring up the issue of my race. I think in a lot of people's minds, this sort of thing just doesn't happen. There's probably a sense that anyone can drive across country, stop wherever and not have to worry about being targeted because of their race or sex. But that's just not the case. I remember reading this article about a transman and his experiences with the world after transitioning.

Honestly, I don't think anyone thinks about it until it happens. I suppose, because you don't want to believe that it happens and that police officers have a completely valid reason for pulling you over... then you see that guy doing 45 in a 30 zone and notice he doesn't even bother to go after him.

Up
