Lost.
Hee Chul was always lost, never found.
When he would run away, no one bothered to look for him.
When he would hide, no one would seek.
When he wanted to die, no one wanted him alive.
Until he met Kyu Hyun.
Hee Chul instantly hated the boy. He was too young, too pretty, too odd, too pointless. He smiled way too easily and he enjoyed everything way too much. Hee Chul didn’t understand how he could smile that much as he just sipped his coffee.
His hatred made him talk to him.
He got up from his own table and walked over to his, coffee in tow. He sat across from the younger boy and just looked at him. Looked at him for minutes on end. Even when the smaller boy looked up and gave him a strange look, Hee Chul continued to look, to watch, to enjoy.
Eventually, he laughed.
Kyu Hyun had no idea why the stranger was laughing, but it made him mad. There was no reason for some strange man he didn’t know to laugh at him.
"What do you want?" he asked, his eyes locked with the other's. He wanted to see inside of him, to see who the man was. He wanted to understand him, to understand his laughter. He wanted to understand the frown that was on his face, the sadness hidden in his eyes.
"Walk with me." Hee Chul then stood up and began walking, this time leaving his coffee cup on the table with Kyu Hyun. Chul had no idea if the younger would follow him, he didn’t really think he wanted him to. But he wanted out of the coffee shop and into the world around him.
It was snowing when they stepped outside. The snow was beautiful, light, happy as it floated beautifully down from the sky. It clung to Hee Chul as he walked, each flake looking so strange against his dark attire. He didn’t look back to see how Kyu Hyun was doing, even though he knew he was jacketless.
"Why did you want me to come out here?" Kyu Hyun had caught up with the older boy. He was freezing and annoyed. The coffee shop had been warm and cozy. He had enjoyed it immensely. He wanted the warmth back. "It's freezing," he went on to explain, complaining.
"But isn't it gorgeous?" Hee Chul had stopped moving and was instead just looking up at the sky. It was a beautiful light blue and the clouds seemed white and fluffy. It didn’t seem as snow was supposed to be pouring down from the bright sky.
Before Kyu Hyun could answer, Hee Chul had thrust his jacket into Kyu's face. "Put it on and stop complaining."
Kyu gave Hee Chul the same strange look as before, but he pulled the jacket it on and stopped complaining.
"Sometimes," Hee Chul said, still looking up at the sky, more talking to himself than his companion, "I feel like a snowflake. Like I'm floating aimlessly, only to crash in the end. And then there's the fact that every snowflake is supposed to be different - just like people. But most people don't care enough to look."
Hee Chul sighed. "It's not like it matters, though," he concluded, beginning to walk once again, his eyes then back down on the ground; "because sometimes people just don't matter."
His words almost made Kyu Hyun stop in his tracks, but he knew he couldn’t risk falling behind the older boy. "And you don't matter?" he asked. He walked faster and then turned around so that he was directly facing Hee Chul as they walked.
"What does it matter if I do? If you don't matter to anyone, then who is there to care that you don't matter to anyone?" Hee Chul tried to walk faster, tried to get away from Kyu's watchful gaze. The look he was giving him almost made him sick. Hee Chul wanted to run away once again.
"Maybe you should care then."
Hee Chul laughed at the idea. "I should care?" he questioned. "How am I supposed to care when no one else bothers to?"
It was silent for minutes. They walked slowly, Hee Chul watching the sky and Kyu Hyun watching Hee Chul. Kyu hated that he didn’t know what to say to the other man. He hated how blank he was, how there was nothing left for him to say.
"You know what else snowflakes are?" he ventured, no longer walking. Hee Chul almost ran into his still figure. "They're beautiful, pure, lovely. They provide life because of the very thing they're made of. They make little kids happy and brighten the day of many others."
He smiled, placing his hands on Hee Chul's shoulders. "If you're going to be a snowflake," he told him, "then you have to be everything a snowflake has to offer.
"Plus," he added, "even if you are falling aimlessly, only to crash, at least you're going somewhere."
