Bob Hope died? Hard to believe. Most of you are way too young to appreciate his achievement. My mother's Bob Hope Halloween kazoo is worth more now.

He used to be friendly to his fans. He lived very near here in Toluca Lake by W.C. Fields.

Bob Hope is one of those people about whom Allister & I are always wondering, '*Is* he still alive?' One of those people who seem to have been around forever and yet you know at some level they're very old and after all no one lives forever...Bing Crosby's another - is he dead? He must be, but I couldn't even tell you which decade he died. The immortals.

Bing died on the golf course in Madrid of all places. That was in 1977 or '78. My mother loved Hope and they shared their birthday. (I share with Peter O'Toole!) Those guys had stardom no one today has. Now there are celebrities, but none can do what the old guys did. Huge box office, broadcast, recording, etc. They were all over the place and made it look easy and fun.

Yep, I'd say he's right up there with Orson Welles in terms of sheer range of media that he covered. Of course, in my opinion, few people compare to Orson Welles, so that's saying a lot.

Don't you think Mr. Hope was more than a touch... odd? Maybe its all those comedians from back then, cause I'd be willing to say the same about Danny Kaye, but still. He always struck me as rather nutty.

Orson Welles should have done more. There's a good Mercury Theater website somewhere.

Bob Hope has no equal now. People don't realize how amazing he and Bing Crosby were-- with no pretensions. Madonna should rethink herself.

I saw Hope interact for a few hours at NBC when he turned 80. He was completely normal and nice. He obviously loved people and wanted them happy. I hear Danny Kaye was odd and I believe it.

Holy crap.

I left this morning about 7:30 am our time and I said "Wow, nothing's happened so far today." I came home and read this and was confused. Looked at CNN and Oh My God. I can't believe it. :(

Yeah, I loved that guy. I only recently read an interview of Woody Allen who said all he'd done was to steal Bob Hope's persona. He said that when he was a kid he saw "Road to Morocco" and knew what he'd do for the rest of his life.

I saw Bob Hope tape his eightieth birthday special. He was amazingly strong and energetic. I really like his movies.

I'd thought about this day many times.
