This is the second (third) time I have written about Aodhán, the previous stories is Be careful When You Out and chapter ? in Bridget Johnston’s Diary. (Links will be edit when those is posted, but not necessary to been read before)
Also it might be good to mention that I’m not that much familiar with being paralyzed, so there can be things that aren’t correct.
Summary: Gift is bought and needs to be wrapped, but it not always easy.
He pulled up to the house and opened the doors. If he didn’t have his car, he would have been homebound in so many more ways and he would’ve needed to trust even more people. Now he just had to get his wheelchair out, open it and then transfer himself over to it. He had done it so many times, it wasn’t a problem. It took a little time, but there had been a time when it had taken longer.
Finally, in his chair, he could grab his bag with presents and paper. Closing the car doors, he rolled up the ramp to go inside. If he could’ve, he would’ve moved away, but he still lived at home. The houses in Donbury weren’t built for people in wheelchairs. Sure most of the stores and the school had updated, so he or the ones with disabilities aids could get around. It was the residential-homes that weren’t adapted. Even if he could afford with a house, it would have cost more to make it accessible, so he had decided to wait until he had his own family, and until then, save up his money. His parents seemed happy about the decision.
When Aodhán got into the kitchen, he was met by his sister Demeltza.
“Hi bro, did you managed to get what you wanted for Mary?” she asked, looking over at him.
“Yes, and I hope she will be happy with it.”
“I’m sure she will. I’m making some lunch; do you want anything?”
“Yeah, but I want to wrap those gift first.” he started to turn around and then asked, “Where’s mum?”
“She and Vivian went to that second hand market over at Newcroft.”
“Okay, I forget that they were talking about going. Let me know when you finished.” He replied, and then wheeled himself out.
He went down the hall to his room and started looking for some tape or paper string. He didn’t find either, so he rolled out towards the kitchen again.
“Dem, do you know if we have any tape and string?” he called out.
It took a while before Demeltza looked out from the kitchen.
“What did you say?”
“I wondered if you know if we have any tape or string I can use when I wrap the gift.”
“Have you looked in dad’s office?”
“No, but I don’t think he would have any string.”
“If you want me too, I can go and check.” She offered. She didn’t mention that she was offering because he wouldn’t be able to reach things if the supplies weren’t placed in the height he could reach, and also, the hunt for tape and strinf probably would go faster.
“Yes please and I will start wrapping the gift.”
Demeltza disappeared into their father’s office and a moment later she was back with both things.
“Here you go.” She set the tape and string beside him on the table.
“Thanks.”
He started to try to get his gift for his girlfriend wrapped, but it turned out not to be that easy. He had chosen to not use a box, and the gift had uneven sides and angles. He knew he might not be the best at wrapping things, but he did want to do it himself.
After a few minutes of trying he cursed and when he managed to rip the paper at several places he ripped all the paper off and made it in to a ball. He was happy he’d bought a whole role of wrapping paper instead of just one sheet. He cut a new piece and started another go at it.
“It’s lunch now, Aidan.” Demeltza said behind him.
He knew that she probably both heard and seen his failure, especially as she used the name by which most people called him.
“Shute, could you help me? The wrapping paper seem to be a little fragile, so it tears easily.” He thought it would be the best to ask, or he might end up without any paper at all.
“’Course I can.”
It was done in no time, and it looked easy when she did it.
“Bro, you so have to tell me what she things of it.”
Aodhán just smiled, it was so typical of her to wanting to know everything about him. Of course he didn’t say everything, but he knew he would tell her later.
They then started to talking about what they would do over Christmas, or what they wanted to do. Hopefully, it would be like it used to be. Aodhán would have Mary over for a dinner the day before Christmas Eve, so she would get her gift then.
