You know, I was thinking the same thing. I think it boils down to a lack of imagination and pure laziness.

Well, the consequences of screwing up can be dire (a 2003 survey found that women dissatisfied with their Valentine's Day presents wil cut their partners off for an average of a week).

Of course, the reason the consequences of screwing up are so dire is that it can indicate you don't know the person very well, not something you want to admit to your SO.
