I'm pretty sure I still win the "Best Present EVER" award, at least for this year. ;) I did have a lovely, relaxing Christmas, too, lots of good food and almost no familial acrimony.
Have you ever read the book The Bat-Poet? It's a beautiful little story, and your metal bat made me think of it.
Don't know anything about stereos, so I can't help you there.
Yes, I have to admit - cooler than your present, it doesn't get. I can't imagine being led out to find a new car as a present - must have been quite a high. (though yours can't hang by its little copper feet from things - not unless cars are very different in the US than here).
I've never read "The Bat-poet" but I was given Randall Jarell books as a child. I loved the black and white illustrations.
Stereo: All I know is that from now on I will only get separate components - i.e., the equalizer, the receiver (where all the things plug into - and is also a radio - hope that's called the receiver), the CD player, and the tape player. I had an all-in-one a long time ago and guess what - they're devilishly hard to repair, and so if one part breaks, that's it for that. And I am hard on tape machines, too.
Currently I have Harmon-Kardon brands for everything except the CD player, which is a Sony. Didn't know anything about Harmon-Kardon at the time but have found they are excellent. Got them at a secondhand kind of shop...they repair things, and I guess sell other people's stuff. And giant speakers. :)

I see your point about separates - I'm just not sure I've got the funds for that. Though there are second-hand electronics shops where I live - might be worth a try.
Conbatulations? *argh*!dolorous_ettDecember 27 2005, 21:25:31 UTC
If I could think of a "Holy... Batman!" joke, now would be the perfect time. Alas, I think I'm going to have to sleep on it.
As I was saying to Aerama, I'm not sure my limited budget is going to stretch to separates (and there's also a space problem - my living room is larger than my icon - but not much). Still, supposing it was do-able, can I be dense and ask who reputable makers are?
I had a music system itself for Christmas! (very large box...) My old one died this year, so it was sorely needed. I do see Aerama's point about separates, since it was only the CD player in mine that went, but I sympathise very much with your thoughts about space and cost. One day I'll treat myself to a super system, when I'm rich *cue hollow laugh*. I'm useless with technical knowledge, so no detailed help there I'm afraid. But I do love my (separate) DAB radio - mainly for 6Music, it has to be said.
Oh, your bat sounds so cute! I love that kind of thing. I got a whole box of York Fruits, and ate an entire layer in about two hours ::hangs head in shame:: I'm actually thinking of buying a new stereo in the sales, but I've not put an awful lot of thought into yet, so perhaps I'll just hijack the info from the responses here! I definitely want a DAB radio - my Dad has one and a lot of the extra stations are good. They're also lots easier to tune (definitely good for me) and not as crackly to listen to. I think it's one of those things that everyone will have to get sooner or later - analogue is going out - so you might as well buy one now rather than fork out again sooner than necessary!
I think my best spontaneous present was a beanbag sheep. It is wonderfully round and fat, and when you sit it on the radiator it gets lovely and warm and then retains the heat for ages. I haven't thought of a name for it yet - any suggestions welcome!

On stereo, I agree with aerama above - if you want decent sound quality, separates by a reputable maker are the best way to go.

You've convinced me - I'm definitely going to go for a DAB radio - not that it took much convincing. Mmmmmmm..... extra stations....

Viridis below has a couple of links - including one to quite a good comparison site.
And everyone who has DAB is praising it, so I'll definitely go for that, even if it does cost a bit more.
