Fatal mistakes and underestimations.

Darkness stabbed at her vision, the twists of pain that coiled from seemingly everywhere, her head, her limbs, her bones, driving the stain deeper across her mind until she fluttered on the edge of consciousness. Regardless of the sensation of vertigo that pulled at her stomach and mind, and the pain, her mind gravitated around the sole thought: she did not want to die.

"Do not fear, Kagome."

The taste of iron-tainted dust and wet fur accompanied the softly spoken words, although she couldn't say she would ever be able to define either taste. Heat overflowed onto her cheeks, in a pathetic image of self-pity, but she didn't care if her last impression on the world would be like this. She would prefer if it was, over the other option.

This demon's assessment of her was wrong. She had never been afraid of death; she feared the cost.

His fingertips hovered over paling skin, skimming the surface but never quite touching, as they traced the twin tracks of water carefully, waiting for her shuddering heartbeat to stop. He preferred this silence.

This woman had thrown her life away so easily, removing his claim as if it was nothing. Using her own fragile mortality to her advantage, with those small, delicate hands, she had used a power that had caught him by surprise; to regain control.

Her underestimation of him was insulting.

The brushes of the fingertips grew softer, skin meeting skin, lightly mapping her face, before they rested open-palmed against her cheek. The sensation was both familiar  and unique; however, the taiyoukai's gaze remained intent on the delicate, strained features as they went lax . Tenseiga hummed, pulsing within it’s own heartbeat, before it was unsheathed, slashing through death collectors that snaked around her soul.

"You will not die so easily."
