Do you know if the acrylic-and-water trick works for different kinds of cotton? I have a lot of acrylic paint, not a lot of fabric dye.

I use it often to paint fabrics and it has always worked well, but you can only do soft colors. If the colors are too thick and vivid, they are chalky on the fabric. To get a nice, even color, it has to be a soft-looking wash like watercolors. I use a brush to make my colors or you can soak it.

I have also had pretty good success with dying natural fabrics with food coloring. I can't guarantee results but I dye playsilks with them. I put them in a pot of hot, almost boiling water on the stove and put in about half of one of those small squeeze pots of the color I want. The water will be very dark. I stir the fabric until it soaks up all of the color. If it's not dark enough, I add more color to the water and wait until it all soaks up. Then I put in about 1/4 cup vinegar and keep the heat on while stirring for about five minutes. The vinegar sets the food dye pretty well. Be careful when washing. Results can vary.
