Twilight of the Endumbening?

'A single swallow doth not a summer make', said Aristotle during one of his grumpier afternoon reveries.

He's right, but that's no reason to ignore it completely.

Waterstones

Earlier today I was in Waterstones, to find that they'd had a bit of a move around in the stock. Whereas I'd always been fond of going on about how more books had been written on ( Read more... )

I would point you towards the documentary channels; but even these pander to the dim these days. Typically they consist of programming about airline crashes or other shock TV, or they simply brush the surface of a subject.

Intelligent TV is pretty hard to find. Enjoyable intelligent TV even more so. What seems to evade programmer's notice is that just as highbrow TV 'locks out' a percentage of the population due to intelligence, pitching low doesn't actually make the entire intelligence spectrum want to tune in.

Forks and pins planned two moves in advance are devastating against the typical highly intermittent player.

Speaking of players... that book you loaned me is excellent.

If I hadn't rediscovered Sagan's Cosmos, or fished out some old OU stuff, I'd've just shrugged and concluded that TV isn't exactly the best medium for conveying tech info, because it 'moves'. In a book, something's written down and it's easy to re-read bits.

Still, my main concern is that shit TV, and by extension a dumbed-down culture, is akin to shit wine: if that's all you've ever experienced you won't know any better. Imagine only ever having eaten Hershey's Kisses, and being kept in the dark about the existence of, say, Valrhona... (Hell, my favourite chocolate at the moment is the co-op dark with orange oil and spices) :P

Forks and pins are great, glad you like the book too!

I really enjoy Mythbusters at the moment. Easy watching and educational.

Only a few chapters in at the moment. Use of synesthasia [eeek! sp!] is indeed pure evil.
