Opinion, please?

We're big fans of Victoria Stilwell's show It's Me or the Dog at our house (my 3-year-old kid, especially). I was wondering if anyone else had read her book and what you thought of it ( Read more... )

I haven't read it yet, but thanks for the heads up. I'm going to see if my library carries it. Do you recall the name?

She's got the book It's Me or the Dog: How To Have The Perfect Pet, which you can get on Amazon.com. She also has the book Fat Dog Slim, but that's only available on the UK Amazon.com.

Thanks. Sadly my library doesn't carry it. I mostly enjoy her show, although I don't agree with everything she says. I'd be interesting in reading her book, but not enough to pay for it :) Too many other more valuable dogs books for me to get.

Me, too! Including the clicker books you recommended to me :) And more Patricia McConnell (who I now live 2 hours away from. Yippee!)

But I have it, I like it, and it's got some really solid stuff in it.

Same as the show, It's Me or the Dog

Has lots of awesome, coffee-table-book quality photos in it, too!

I love the show, and flipped through her book at the store. The only thing that caught my eye was how she advocates a very low protein diet for all dogs, which rather flies in the face of current research about domesticated dogs and their nutritional needs. Otherwise, it was pretty much what you see on the show, but condensed into an easy to read, instructive format.

Did she say why?

I believe some study out there showed that higher protein diets can increase aggression, but I'm not sure if that's only in cases where the dog was aggressive to begin with.

It was a little while ago that I read it but I think it was related to aggression, or at least over-stimulation. I think she also said they "don't need" much protein, and get "most of their nutritional needs from carbohydrates". If I remember correctly, she did the vague "experts say" without referencing any sources.

What? wow. That's just plain silly. Wild Canines out there are not gulping down mostly carbs and very little protein. That's too bad since some people might read that and not do further research.

I LOVE HER.

Haven't read her book, but watch her every monring (I like the logo for the British show better). I think she's great and everything she's said in the show, works and has worked for our dogs.

I like the logo for the British show, too. But I also like how much more in-depth she is in the 1-hour American shows.
