Is what you are trying not working? What issue are you having?
My ACD/terrier mix actually knows the command "go pee/go potty" and will relieve himself when we get to a grassy area on command. Deification is a little less precise, but he knows when we stop and let him sniff around thats the time to do his business.
The only time he ever really needs strong leadership and discipline is during walks and I want to make sure he still knows that WE are in charge during walks.
We have only had him for three days so we're still working on walks. Since he's a lab he loooooves to smell anything and everything. I'm basically looking for a way to either know when he's smelling to find a good spot to pee/poop in or if he's just smelling to smell and do his thing.
So, you use a command for your dog? Marley responds really well to commands so if that is what you're saying I might give that a try.
Yep! Sometimes I need to take him out in a hurry and its really convenient for him to be able to go quickly and on command.
If you want your walks to be really structured, you might want to try setting a time out during the walk to stop and let him sniff around and do his business. If you want things to be extra structured, teaching him a command for going potty might help you allot :)
my male dog is a big fan of marking. i give him a countdown '3-2-1 let's go' so that he gets his sniffs/elimination in and i don't have to spend 1,000 hours walking him (he'd sniff every fallen leaf if he had the chance).
Yeah, Marley is a sniff machine! He sniffs individual ants!
This morning's walk was 100% better like every walk gets. Like a few people have said, I think it's just going to be a matter of time for me to figure out his cues.
I want him to sniff around and as long as he's walking with me he can sniff all he wants to. I just don't want him to tug and take over the walk in case we have to deal with something like another dog or a child for his safety. He's extremely inquisitive and he's not a biter so I don't want him to get hurt. )
If its the pulling that is causing the issue, invest in a gentle leader. That way you have better control of his pulling but it still allows him all the freedom to sniff and be marley.
