In fairness to Whedon, the cast were always very close in form to the X-Men with Buffy being very heavily based off Kitty Pryde, and the general interplay being a melange of X-characteristics (I would have said Xander for a somewhat insensitive mix of Iceman and Beast, for example)

This was fine in the series, where the subtext was, y'know, subtext. Literalising the issue in comics of all places is a smidgen misguided. That this is on top of the faintly ludicrous idea that the general populace would be okay with vampires murdering people on TV (which makes as much sense as Norman "Hey I'm the Green Goblin" Osborne running the USA)... It's a shame, because they already had the justification for the dislike in place very early on- the slayers, including Buffy, robbed a significant amount of capital to fund their operation...
