I wanna say it was Robot, probably got it after I saw School Reunion with Sarah Jane Smith and was oh I have to find her earlier stuff. It wasn't all that bad, hokey of course because of the big giant robot on green screen but I liked the story.
Where does the TV movie fall on this spectrum? ;) Because that was the first Who unrelated to the new series that I watched. And, well. I think I quite enjoyed it, despite its quite obvious short-comings, though it didn't exactly make me want to watch more. I'd probably enjoy it more now after having seen much more of Classic Who, because I have a feeling it'd feel like a much more natural development from the camp and Classic Who-ness than the other way around.
The first proper serial however was The Pirate Planet. Which I... didn't hate, but it didn't make me want to watch more. After having seen most of Tom Baker's run I now understand that was simply because Four and I just don't click.
Some time later a friend showed me The Five Doctors. And all was rainbows and kittens and a minimum of two Classic serials per day throughout all of summer break.
The VERY first Classic that I ever watched was the Five Doctors, because I figured that would give me a sampling of several of the Doctors so I could pick where to go from there. I didn't really get what was going on (and my mom kept making fun of it while I was trying to watch), and turned it off after about 20 minutes and gave up on Classic for a while.
The first one I actually finished was Robot, which I completely loved. I'm quite a fan of low budget campy old science fiction, so a serial with a CG robot king kong frankenstein was pretty much perfect for me. It took a while to figure out that Tom Baker was actually good rather than just funny, though.
For the record, when I watched the Five Doctors again in context? It's now towards the top of my list. (I still haven't finished Classic yet *should get on that*)
I remember that I was a teenager and a friend of mine was telling me I should watch this show about a Doctor and his "tardis" and I was like "tortoise??" and he was like "TARDIS!!! something about a time machine that looks like a phone box" and I was like "what the heck is a phone box?" but eventually I was convinced to stay up on Saturday night to start a serial, which began at 10 pm and went as long as there were episodes
( ... )
Mine was An Unearthly Child. After I'd seen part of the Eccleston season on Swedish TV and later got this crazy idea to watch the whole of Doctor Who from the very beginning (starting with An Unearthly Child), which I now have done (meaning that I've catched up). And while I don't really remember my exact impression, I must have liked it 'cause I continued to go through with this crazy idea of mine and eventually got hooked on the show that way (more so than I got by what I saw of Eccleston's season, so Hartnell is much more MY Doctor than Eccleston ever was)
