I'm terribly sorry to say this but I've never really listened to any of the stories (except a few random excerpts on DVDs...) but I think Mel, bless her, was just really unfortunately written in the series (I only have one of her stories so far as Bonnie Langford scares me... but that's due to issues I've had meeting her backstage nothing to do with Melanie!) and as for Peri... yikes. Lovely girl, crap accent, dodgy clothing but generally... when she's allowed to be, she's pretty damn good as a companion.

That all being said, any suggestions for audios I should start with?

Audios to start with? I think that depend on your preferences really. Are you talking audios in general, or specifically ones with Mel or Peri in them? I'd be happy to give recommendations, as I've heard ALOT of the audios I think more people should listen to them as they're phenomenal, but to be able to recommend ones I think you would like I'd need to know more about what you're after and more about your taste and such.

Mel and Peri mainly, since everyone seems to think they're less... awkward... in audios. Also, any with Liz (Shaw) and SJ would be wonderful... or Leela.

My taste is pretty random but yes, anything with those girls would be amazing.

Well, for Peri I'd say start with either the main range audio The Eye of the Scorpion (with the 5th Doctor), which also introduces audio companion Erimem, OR the lost story The Nightmare Fair (with the 6th Doctor). Then you can continue along either path (the rest of the main range audios with Peri & Erimem as 5th Doctor companions, or the rest of the 6th Doctor lost stories ( ... )
