Question about the Doctor's memory in DotD

Nov 28, 2013 17:48

At what point does the Doctor's memory of his 'adventure' in DotD start and stop?

I've never seen any of the Classic series, or the other episodes where the Doctor meets other regenerations of himself.  Is there a standard time frame for memory loss?  Or was this actually answered somewhere in DotD and I totally just missed it?

Just in case of spoilers... )

Based on his "Oh, this is where I show up", 10 evidently remembers the arrival of 11 through the rift.

Canon does like to contradict itself, so I don't think there's any way anyone can really clarify it. I mean, in The Five Doctors, Two is chatting to the Brigadier about old times and mentions Omega - but when he becomes Three and the Three Doctors actually happens, he has no idea that this has happened to him before. I like to believe they forget most of it once they've parted, barring a few small unimportant details like "wow, next me is an arrogant dandy and I don't like him", more is lost during regeneration, and then maybe a few details start coming back when they cross paths again in the same way that people remember details of holidays they'd forgotten about when they find the old photographs at the back of the junk drawer.

That's an interesting question. Apparently 10 remembered marrying Elizabeth I because he mentioned it in EoT, but he didn't remember that he was his own best men. He also didn't seem to remember why he married her, calling it a bad mistake. 11 sort of remembers meeting himself. He also didn't seem surprised by the fissure in time showing up. He just said 'oh no, not now!'

Apparently, the event is viewed from the 'current' Doctor's standpoint. His is the accurate timeline and the other 2 Doctors are out of sync (which doesn't make sense to me ...anyway, that's a different post). So perhaps, the farther away from the "accurate" timeline, the worse the memory loss. 11 retains the information, 10 forgets the details that involve multiple Doctors, and 9 is full of angst and anger because he still thinks he killed his people.

I feel somewhat like they only remember an event AS it is happening. I dunno its a bit of a mess.

So basically, it's a 'don't think too hard and just roll with it' situation.
