10 Female Writers Who Could (and Should) Write For Doctor Who

Nov 24, 2013 12:18

There has been a lot of discussion about how Doctor Who needs more female writers. However this discussion is often scuppered because most article writers simply can't think of anyone or come up with totally unrealistic suggestions. Therefore, I thought I would come up with a list of ten writers who could (and should) write for Doctor Who based on ( Read more... )

I think that they could all be awesome. The only reservations I'd have is those who have only written novels, because writing novels is a different discipline to writing scripts. That's not to say that they couldn't, far from it. More that they've not done it yet, doesn't mean that they wouldn't be up for the challenge.

All of them have some script work, I made that a condition (otherwise I'd probably have included people like JK Rowling and Sarah Waters). Lloyd Rose has done audio plays and American TV, whilst Malorie Blackman apparently wrote the scripts for some children's adaptations in the 90s.

Fair enough :-) didn't realise that. And that was my only reservation, the only questions now is "would they want to?" and "do they have time to?"

Yeah that's always the question. Given that they all have some genre experience I'd hope at least one or two would give it a go. It is Doctor Who after all :D

I would have considered Jane Espenson to be on the list. An American writer yes, but her experience in writing for cult genre shows like Buffy and Angel gives her the experience to handle a show with a large dedicated fan base. Plus her episodes are character centric and would be great for revealing aspects of the doctor that are undiscovered as of yet.

I second Jane Espenson. I'm a huge fan of Buffy. It would be wonderful if she wrote for Doctor Who. Plus a little outside perspective from an American writer would be pretty interesting, I think.

So now we have 11 .... I think anyone arguing "but no one can think of any female writers" is going to be nailed.

Can we get to 20?

She has no TV or script writin experience though does she? Plus she's Australian.

This list is not meant to be "my favourite female writers" which are most of the lists I am critical of, but ones that would have a certain chance of being hired.

Thanks for pulling this together! It's well past time for more female writers on the series.
