I think my first encounter was either The Burning or The Mutant Phase (from the free DWM sample).
This is the year where Doctor Who finally came out of the darkness and became beautiful again. There is a lot to love this year, The Holy Terror and The Marian Conspiracy showed just how great a Doctor Colin Baker was, whilst The Fires of Vulcan showed how good season 24 could have been. Best of all the Eighth Doctor had wiped away all the horrible Faction Paradox nonsense in Ancestor Cell and the brilliant Earth exile arc began with The Burning. However, my favourite is actually none of these, it is The Shadow of the Scourge. This is for the purely fannish reason of getting to hear the Virgin TARDIS team acting off each other for the first time. The result is wonderful.
I haven't got to some of the Compassion era 8DA novels yet (still wading through Planet 5) which I think might have their problems. So instead I'll go for The Land of the Dead which isn't the best of Big Finish
( ... )
Have you ever done like a greatest hits or personal favorites out of all the books and audios? I have to pick them up one or two at a time, and it's difficult to know how to prioritize. :)
I'm very sympathetic to this request. The only reason I haven't done such a post for the spinoff books is that I am within shouting distance of finishing the first range, the New Adventures, and will do one then. I did a roundup post on the Target novelisations here and on the first ten years of Big Finish here.
