Toby Whithouse to take over from Moffat?

“I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t intrigued by the idea, but also it would be terrifying. It’s definitely something I’d be really tempted by but I’m genuinely not in any hurry to do it. And why do people assume the BBC would want me? I’m sure there are much stronger contenders than me!”Better him than Mark Gatiss. I hope he does, because I really ( Read more... )

I've only really loved about half of his DW episodes, but Being Human is definitely a good selling point for me!

Yeah Gatiss is the very LAST person I would want to take over Doctor Who from Moffat because I generally do not like his episodes (only one I even remotely liked was The Unquiet Dead).

Wellll, in the best of all possible worlds it'd be Paul Cornell taking over after Moffat leaves, but of the current crop of writers, Whithouse is the only one I'd trust within spitting distance of the show. (Except Gaiman, obviously, but I doubt he'd be interested in the showrunner spot.) Gatiss is an adorable fanboy and a fount of interesting ideas, but he can't put them into execution to save his life, or even pace an episode properly. And I guess the only other contender would be Chibnall, who writes good monster-of-the-week one-offs, but try to hand him anything with more depth than your average mud puddle and you get The Hungry Earth/Cold Blood.

I'd like Cornell or someone completely left field that no one's thought of yet. But not Gatiss. It's strange that he and Moffat are so good at Sherlock and so crud at Who.

Is it just me, or did Cornell totally rule himself out of the running years ago?

Rightly or wrongly, I assumed he'd ruled himself out of the running (next time round, maybe not forever) by seemingly not concentrating on being a tv writer and maker of tv shows post-Pulse. He wants to write his comics, he wants to write his novels, he's doing those things, good on him.

But when the BBC look to hire a new showrunner for Doctor Who, they're going to look for someone with recent experience of running tv shows. Cornell doesn't have any. Neil Gaiman is even less qualified.

What's wrong with Gatiss (asked totally from curiosity and wanting to start a discussion, nothing else). I mean, yeah, it might end up being 90% victorian England horror stuff but....his writing isn't bad, is it? I don't know, I tend not to think too much while watching. I'm really curious to hear what other people have to say as I'm not that plot-minded when looking back at a chapter.

Trouble is it ain't that good either!

I really hate the fact it is Gatiss who will be the one to bring back another cliasic Who villian because I just do't usually like his writing on DW!

No, thanks. I only liked the first series of Being Human.
