BBC Press office just tweeted this. Given my total hatred for the format, I greet this with a resounding *yawn*. How many people even have 3D televisions anyway?

It is a waste of money that could be better spent somewhere other than on a pointless gimmick. All it is doing is reducing the audience since there is a non-negligible number of people that will refuse to watch 3D (any 3D) on pure principle. I mean look what happened to Dredd at the cinema last year, massive buzz in favour of the movie, then they forced an almost total 3D release and that buzz turned sour and people stayed away in droves. BBC is pretty much repeating others mistakes.

The only way I can see much of the fanbase seeing this in 3D is if the BBC arrange to show it live in cinemas across the UK (and maybe even the world?). I know some people will be quite happy to see this, but I'm just wondering how many people will see it in 3D on the night. A few thousand?

But I wonder who would appreciate such a splendid joke, pffftt...

So a complaint to the BBC about how they are applying the license fee would seem appropriate.
