The Movie Controversy Continues!

Dec 02, 2011 22:07

Previously, on Moffat vs Yates...
So David Yates said a while back that he was developing a Doctor Who feature film. And various Doctor Who people, including the brand manager and the editor of Doctor Who Magazine seemed completely surprised by this. Steven Moffat, seemingly just as surprised, responded with skepticsm to the idea.

And now, Round Two ( Read more... )

steven moffat, the movie

Where this story is concerned my first and gut reaction is to believe what Moffat says.

Trying to reboot Who would be crazy. And we must assume the Supremo knows what he's talking about

But that would mean the TV series going on hiatus while the movie is filmed, which would be the last thing I want as a fan.

Really?

I would much rather the show went on hiatus while a film was made by a competant team who know what their doing instead of allowing some cack handed idiot with no respect for canon get his hands on it

So do I. I'll get worried when a cack-handed idiot with no respect for canon is announced to take over the project. While it's David Yates, evidently expressing a love for the subject matter and respect for the work of RTD and Moffat, I'm fine with an alternate continuity to the TV series existing in parallel.

As always with Auntie, the left hand knows not what the right hand is doing.

Indeed! And one of the many weird things about this is that it's Steven Moffat and David Yates talking about it, there seems to be no official word from the heads at the BBC or Worldwide.

i tend to believe that yates's desire and initial panderings about the idea will fizzle out because he wouldn't be able to secure the rights to the Doctor Who brand.

Back when the return of Doctor Who was announced, some wrangling for the rights had to be done for it to come back as a TV series because I think Worldwide held them in order to make a movie. The rights to Doctor Who must be a murky area.
What you say is a possibility, but I hope they work things out and Yates does get to do the movie he wants with everyone's blessing.

What I'm tempted to posture happened is this.

Someone at BBC Worldwide (like Julie Gardner or someone) bumped into Yates at a party or something and asked him if theoretically at some point in a possible future he might be interested in directing a Doctor Who movie.

Only he missed they were talking theoretically

Well, he said he's developing it with Jane Tranter. The scenario you propose doesn't seem possible to me. He said he's developing the project, he didn't say 'he's in talks' to do it. I reckon there must already be some kind of contract.

Yes but let's look at what we've got so far.

In the one corner we've got Yates who has said at a couple of red carpet events and interviews that he might be working on something at some point in the future. But no word of confirmation from either BBC Worldwide (who he claims to be working with) or Jane Tranter (who less we forget no longer has any control over Doctor Who).

In the other corner we have Moffat who is current reiging Who Supremo and the man who lives, breaths and eats Doctor Who. First he implies that what Yates is saying is all around bunk (the Moonshot comment) that he comes out and outwright says that it's all around bunk.

Now who are you more tempted to believe? The voice of one lone director or the words of the Who King?

It looks almost like the people at BBC and Worldwide are just as confused as we are.

i sincerely feel that, if they're going to make some crappy movie, just leave the show as it is. and DONT TOUCH IT. It's already a succesfull thing.

and i am not a very big fan of david yates either
