Last night, the Season 6 two-parter premiered at a screening in NYC, which I was fortunate enough to attend. Moffat made us promise no spoilers, but here are some impressions and teasers for you all ;)
- The two-part opener was - spectacular. The pacing was brilliant, and somehow the episodes were incredibly intense, twisty, creepy, and intriguing while at the same time packed with wit, one-liners, and fun. There was an instant standing ovation at the end. Many of us agreed that the opener was so big, that it felt more like a season finale.
- There were audible gasps from the audience throughout both episodes (though especially the second), along with a lot of awwws and even more laughs
- The opening scene of the first episode/part was hilarious & Matt Smith fangirls especially will be squealing with joy. We see a side of the Doctor I don't think we ever have before
- Cliffhanger at the end of Part 1 will leave you dangling and desperate for the next episode
- Part 2 contains one of the creepiest extended sequences I've seen on tv, nonetheless Who. Maybe it was heightened by watching on the big screen but - wow. And the monsters themselves easily rank among the scariest of New Who.
- The end of the second episode was intriguing, game-changing, and I cannot stop thinking about it. Its bound to lead to a lot of speculation, as will quite a few other things we learn.
- I loved the dynamics between - EVERYONE in the episodes.
- We learn more about River Song.
- We learn more about Rory and how the 2000 years affected him.
- I would say Amy is perhaps a bigger player in the two-parter than the Doctor and I'm excited to see where this season takes her.
- Mark Sheppard is - awesome.
- It was appropriate for the screening/premiere to have taken place in America, because arguably, America is a character in itself. There are A LOT of references concerning the story taking place in America, both celebratory and scathing (depending on your take, I guess).
- There were some great shippy moments
- The first episode/part was fantastic, but I think the second episode/part was even better.
- After viewing the two-parter, my mind was left feeling invigorated, beaten, discombobulated, and desperate for more - akin to how it did after watching the best and most twisty/intriguing episodes of Lost.
- I can't wait to watch them again and the rest of the season cannot arrive soon enough.
If anyone has any questions, I'm more than happy to answer them, but no spoilers.
Also, was anyone else there last night? I'd love to talk about the episodes with someone.
