Joseph Millson: Whovian MILF Hunter

Aug 08, 2008 04:54

I hadn't even heard of Joseph Millson until a year and a half ago, and now, I think I'd seriously consider giving up my left nut to trade places with him.

I became acquainted with his work, of course, through his role in The Sarah Jane Adventures, in which he's played Alan Jackson, the 30something divorced dad to Sarah Jane Smith's plucky teen sidekick on the show, and a possible love interest to the 50something Sarah Jane herself. In addition to achieving an adorably naturalistic onscreen relationship with Yasmin Paige, the talented actress who plays Alan's daughter Maria, Millson's chemistry with Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane is both sizzling and palpable, to the point that I'm far from alone in fandom in shipping Sarah Jane and Alan as a sexy couple who should happen in canon (no matter how much Sladen herself insists "that would be cradle snatching!").

Well, while I wasn't paying attention, it turns out that Millson has decided to one-up Tenth Doctor David Tennant, whose own onscreen chemistry with Sladen has been no less affectionate or genuine, not only by playing Hamlet on stage, just as Tennant is doing opposite Patrick Stewart (Y HALO THAR CAPTAIN PICARD), but also by doing so opposite Louise Jameson as Gertrude.

Yeah; that Louise Jameson. As in, "Leela of the Sevateem" Louise Jameson, former companion to Fourth Doctor Tom Baker.

Jameson herself seems fairly fond of Millson:As does Sixth Doctor Colin Baker, who went to see his friend Jameson's performance as Gertrude:

Also excellent and an actor to watch was Joseph Millson as Hamlet. A brilliantly clear and immaculate performance. Funny, poignant and powerful by turn. Apparently he guested in the Sarah Jane spin-off, which I haven't seen.
Of course, the most telling and important response has been from the critical press itself:
    The Stage: Hamlet

Joseph Millson’s Hamlet is outstanding. His descent into apparent madness is played with rare energy and surprisingly effective humour, alternating instantly between jester and tragic victim of his uncle’s evil wiles. He delivers a truly multi-layered character, accessible yet unfathomable. Millson’s mesmeric performance is strongly supported by Louise Jameson as a regal, vulnerable Gertrude and Kellie Shirley as a beautifully fragile Ophelia.
Of course, we all know what this means, right? Now that Millson has plowed his way through two consecutive original series Doctor Who cougar companions, there's no way he's going to stop, not now that he's gotten a taste for it.

MARY TAMM AND LALLA WARD, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. JOSEPH MILLSON, WHOVIAN MILF HUNTER, IS COMING FOR YOU, AND LIKE THE TERMINATOR, HE ABSOLUTELY WILL NOT STOP, EVER, UNTIL YOU ARE DEAD BRED.
