Have To Ask

Okay, I cannot get over how short the Sontarans are in the new series. What happened? I mean last night I was so thrown off by how short they were I dug out my copy of The Invasion of Time because I just knew the Sontarans were that short before in the old series. I was right I think because the Sontarans in The Invasion of Time were about head to ( Read more... )

Oh come on - I can't remember how short they were in The Two Doctors but they certainly weren't as short as they are in the new series in The Invasion of Time! They definitely seemed to have shrunk to me since the last time the Doctor ran into them.

Lynx and Styre, the first two, were quite small :)

Obviously I missed seeing those two as I always remember them as being pretty big.

But the Sontarans are meant to be that short, a design standard seemed to get forgotten in the later stories. Sontara is a high-gravity world, so in keeping with normal Sci-Fi traits they developed as a short, squat, powerful race - I remember once reading a description (in DWM I think) that said if the Ogrons were Rottweilers, then the Sontarans were bulldogs.

Sort of like intergalactic Napoléon Bonapartes huh?

Napoleon was average height for a Frenchman at the time, the myth that he was short came about because he liked to surround himself with exceptionally tall generals. Other than that, yes.

Sontarans are a best described by the Thomas Hobbes quote : "Nasty, Brutish and Short"

The Sontarans were always supposed to be short and squat, but I do dislike the way the new series turned that into a sight gag. Which is a shame, as I actually think Christopher Ryan gave a very good performance as Staal.

Yeah I think that annoyed me more than seeing the Sontarans look that short. They were definitely having too much fun with it.

And they weren't terribly squat, either.

I don't think I would've minded the exceptional shortness if their limbs were a little thicker (so you'd guess they'd be the mass of a normal human, if not more so, even though they're shorter than one).
