Lachlan woke up so quickly and abruptly that he nearly fell off the recliner chair. He caught himself just before he ended up with any broken bones, but the groggy scramble to get up was anything but elegant. Tara looked up from where she was standing over the hospital crib and smiled softly in amusement. It took her husband a few moments to get his bearings before he spotted his wife with his son and he smiled sleepily as he shuffled his way over to her to wrap his arm around her waist and rest his head on her shoulder. “How is he?” he asked, his voice hoarse from the sleep.
Tara turned back to her son who was watching her intently while his little hand gripped around her thumb. She was using her other hand to gently massage his arms and legs to keep his blood circulating and remind him not everyone that touched him in this place was going to hurt him or prick him. “He’s doing okay,” she assured him softly, still smiling. “No cries for nearly three hours now. Only two wet nappies.”
Lachlan reached in to the crib and stroked under his son’s chin. “You being a good wee boy for Mummy, beautiful?” He was immediately met with a soft coo and soon a baby smile. “Oh god, I’m so fecking relieved to see that…” he said, letting out a heavy breath.
“I know,” Tara laughed softly. “I cried for almost fifteen minutes when I saw he was smiling. I know we’re not out of the woods yet but I just know when he smiles he’s not hurting.” She brushed her finger across Lachlan’s cheek with a fond grin. “Did you sleep well? You’ve got creases all up the side of your face, gorgeous. You’ve been out for nearly four hours.” She leaned in and gave him a soft kiss.
Lachlan closed his eyes, humming in appreciation at the kiss. “Did you drug me?” he asked jokingly and went back to watching his son with that stupid smile he couldn’t wipe off his face every time he watched him.
“Maybe a little,” Tara laughed quietly, enjoying the way Lachlan looked when he was offspring watching. She wasn’t sure that awed feeling that he was there’s would ever wear off. He could be up on stage receiving his testamur at his graduation and they would both still be grinning stupidly like that. It was proud parent prerogative, even if it would eventually become embarrassing to their son. “I was very discreet, wasn’t I? It was either that or watch you pass out cold from exhaustion and I don’t need you both as patients.”
“You’re a bad influence on my son,” Lachlan said with a smirk. “Did you hear that, buddy? Your Mummy drugged me so she could have her wicked way with me, which you are so too young to hear about. You cannae know about the benefits of having something under your kilt until you’re at least sixteen. Fifteen… okay, maybe fourteen…” he added with a sheepish smile at his wife. “I want him to have the best out of life!”
Tara snorted in amusement, watching Riley still reacting to his Dad’s presence with soft cooing. She checked the insulin monitor feeding into his tummy for about the eight hundredth time that hour. It was becoming habit now. “Is that your subtle way of saying you want to make out a little when he’s napping?” she asked, glancing at Lachlan knowingly. “You’re making it awfully difficult for me to resist your passive advances standing there looking all hot and ruffled. I’ll never tire of the benefits of what’s under your kilt.”
Lachlan smirked and reached over to dim the lights above the crib and started jiggling it softly in an attempt to lull Riley to sleep. “Is this the part I point out we’ve only had sex once in over twelve weeks? Not that I’m complaining! I’m nay. I just…”
“Horny,” Tara finished for him with a smile. “Me too. I miss feeling you naked and close to me. Bed has gone from a hot, sweaty amusement park of pleasure to… just bed.”
Lachlan nodded, watching as his son’s eyes started to droop in the rhythmic rocking. “But how fucking nice does bed feel after a day on our feet with the bairn?” he pointed out, shaking his head in amusement. “Times change, huh?”
“Distinctly…” Tara murmured in agreement. “I love it, though. Even the hard parts.”
Lachlan turned to meet her gaze, smiling in the dimmed light of the room. “Aye. Every minute. You changed my life, Tara Campbell. You’ve given me everything I always wanted and more.”
“Ditto.” Tara’s smile brightened and she touched his cheek. “Do you think he will mind if we leave him with Uncle Riley and Aunty Evie while we go home for a quickie?” she asked, eyebrows raised hopefully.
Lachlan watched his now sleeping son, oblivious to his clinical surroundings. “If he does, he’ll understand when he’s thirteen…” he said with a cheeky smirk at his wife.
Tara laughed, smacking him softly in the arm but then she pulled him into a deep kiss. At least she knew now it wasn’t difficult at all to be parents and still remain totally and wholly in love with each other.
