"How dare he! Lesbians in that era were sent to insane asylums, not treated with respect by Scotland Yard, so it's utterly unrealistic for Vastra to out the two of them like that. (Besides, he's obviously implying that lesbian relationships are the equivalent of kissing a lizard.)"
Something like that, perhaps.
(Actually, I don't think Vastra did out them, exactly. I think she very cleverly dropped her relationship status at the end of a long string of revelations which got filed under, "I am never reporting this, ever, they'd send me to the loony bin." Besides-realistic? You've got a katana-wielding reptilian Sherlock Holmes from the dawn of time and an alien dwarf with a (hilarious) aggression management problem-I think possibly this isn't the best place for "realistic.")
Yeah, something like that. *sigh* And I think you're right, it's not like the detective would be able to tell anyone (quite apart from the fact that homosexual relationships between women were never made illegal in Britain).
Just went on tumblr, and it seems the argument is going to be simpler and more asinine than the one I came up with. The screechy people are saying that (a) Jenny and Vastra's relationship is just used as a joke to fluster the police inspector, (b) the police inspector is clearly racist and ableist for asking about Vastra's "skin condition" and getting stuck on the notion of Strax being from Turkey, and therefore somehow (c) Moffat should feel ashamed of condoning such racism.
The thought that the inspector is the butt of the joke seems not to have occurred to them. Nor does the fact that you're not supposed to laugh at the fact that Jenny and Vastra are lovers, but at the way they managed to break the inspector's brain.
Luckily, a lot of the people on tumblr seem to find this a weak argument, and have pointed out that writing a Victorian man as a Victorian man is really stretching the definition of "racist and ableist." Especially since writers do not approve of every character they write.
