*sigh* No love for Martha? RTD doing the timey-wimey thing instead of Moffat, showcases her family and her relationship with them very effectively, has a chilling villain and Ten is actually pretty decent throughout it (mainly because he's giving her the come on) before he bites her head off and says "one trip, that's all".
I don't really agree with this list entirely but I do love that Ian & Barbara got a spot. The top spot, even. I'll never forget watching An Unearthly Child for the first time, at the near-beginning of my eager attempts to start understanding Classic Who, and being so awestruck by them and their first encounter with the Doctor.
One of my favorite introductions will always be Steven Taylor's, though. Another stowaway, actually the first stowaway, and so adorably incredulous throughout The Time Meddler.
Eh, I'm wondering if this list should have been longer.
I rather have a soft spot for Leela's intro. I mean, she recognizes the Doctor the instant she sees him-as the Devil, basically. I like it when the Doctor's presence expands or shakes up a person's universe, and Leela's world pretty much got flipped upside down.
I kind of liked Tegan's intro. The TARDIS was parked around a regular police box so they could take measurements, and Tegan, whose car has broken down on her way to her first day as an airline stewardess, steps inside to make a phone call. Cue shenanigans.
I'm so happy River is on this list, and I'm doubly psyched that Ian and Barbara were chosen as #1. "An Unearthly Child" was such a wonderful episode, a terrific introduction to all the characters. The early episodes appear very dated to modern eyes, but the storytelling was still wonderful.

It should've been at least 'Top 10'.
