I saw this episode when it was first broadcast ON MY OWN IN A DARKENED HOUSE WITH A WOOD AT THE BACK OF IT. I loved Sally Sparrow. I felt that Larry was given a bit of a raw deal at first - it's his flat, after all, how was he supposed to know a strange woman that he'd never met before would come charging in. I mean, Cathy hadn't even told him Sally had her own key. *headdesk* Really, I tolerate that scene for the second time they meet and Larry remembers and is properly embarrassed. For UK viewers, he's in one of the current Halifax adverts and is quite dishy without the beard.
Then there's one of the best 'Freudian slip' moments I've ever seen on television:
"Just my number. Not a kiss, not a promise, just a phone number." "And that's Sally-?" "Sally Shipton - SPARROW - Sally Sparrow!"
Oh Carey Mulligan, you were so adorable.
This episode started me on a dilapidated buildings/urban exploration kick which has not died yet.
PLUS Martha giving the Doctor some lip, a detective story and a haunted house mystery ALL IN ONE. *sigh* So
Oh god, I loved Blink. I loved it when I first watched it, when I fell absolutely in love with Sally Sparrow and DI Shipton and the Nightingale siblings. It was clever and funny and scary and just...perfect. Plus it was the first Doctor Who episode ever to make me actually scream - the moment Larry opens his eyes and suddenly the Angel is right there...I was mocked for weeks
( ... )
This episode had me terrified for a couple of days after I first watched it, yet I had to go back and watch it again later because it was so damn good, despite how much it scared me. Despite the creep factor, it's honestly one of my favorite Doctor Who episodes.
Because of this episode, though, I can't look at certain statues the same way any more, particularly the humanoid ones. Yes, even the little ones. Towards the beginning of the summer, my local supermarket started stocking little angel statues to put in your garden that looked suspiciously like the Weeping Angels. They were a different color, but they were pretty damn close. I actually found myself staring at them until I found the aisle I needed (which I promptly bolted down and nearly crashed into a little old lady with a shopping cart; I felt like such a dork afterwards).
The screencap above reminds me that I forgot to mention the opening of this episode is BRILLIANT. Creepy, suspenseful, and then that masterful reveal of the Doctor's message and the year it was written. Genius.
