So, yeah, according to some people in fandom, this comm is a den of character and RTD bashing, and us mods all hate on River Song.

Go figure.

Anyway, HBIC is coming back, and we may finally get to find out who she really is in the Doctor's life. <3

At the risk of sounding like a Rose and/or Ten basher (WHICH IS NOT THE CASE. GOD. SJGKNDFJK. IF THERE'S ANYTHING THAT BOTHERS ME IT'S THIS IDEA THAT I HATE TEN WHEN IN FACT HE'S THE DOCTOR WHO MADE ME FALL IN LOVE WITH THE SHOW BUT WHATEVER LET'S NOT GET INTO THAT) I'm very excited to see the exploration of a ~deep~ connection between the Doctor and a new companion. Of course the Doctor and Amy are going to have what looks like an amazing bond, but it will be interesting to see how the supposedly *epic* bond between Eleven and River plays out with her not actually being a full time TARDIS companion. If that makes sense.

The problem with River in S4, I think, is exactly what she said herself: She was too early. Donna's Doctor wasn't her Doctor. And I quite liked the metaness of that, especially the way she was mirrored in the finale by Rose... because Donna's Doctor wasn't Rose's either. She was too late. (I'm not saying that this means that she and TenToo can't work it out - what I mean is that the Doctor keeps growing and changing, and we can see that reflected in his companions.)

But - I always loved River for the glimpses she gave us of Eleven...

Why is Moffat's Doctor Who like an Oscar-winning movie? A River runs through it!
I have River as the companion in one of my crossovers because I wanted to make the point that it's set during the Doctor's tenth incarnation after Donna's travels:
