On Cynicism

My family's email list has exchanged a round of email about the election. One of my uncles emailed everybody to celebrate Obama's victory, one of my aunts replied, basically, to say "Congratulations, and I hope you're right," and my dad responded like so:

Agreed. I think the thing that impressed me most about President-Elect Obama's victory speech (and seeing those words on the screen is indeed awe-inspiring) was that he said outright that this is an amazing victory, but that we are just getting started, that we have so far to go. That things are broken, and that we may not be able to fix them all in his first term. He will be a President who does not make wild promises that he cannot keep. This is the first time in my life that I've been excited about an incoming president.

You have put my feelings into words much better then I could have. All I know is that, at least for today, the angry bastard in me is quiet, and I'm looking towards tomorrow with hope.

Doesn't hurt that I get a floor show every time I walk into the break room, hearing all the nutjobs talk about how this is the beginning of the end for America. It's all I can do not to collapse in hysterical laughter.
