The "neo-Confederate" tag has less to do with their collective opinion on the role of government (which in practice, is rather hypocritical if you see the states that take in more federal funds than they produce in tax revenue) but their social attitudes. To put it a little plainly, much of the South is still butthurt that they lost the Civil War and goes with whichever party is more racist and assuages their Antebellum pain points.

Nazis were called "Socialist" but in practice they were a far-right, totalitarian fascist regime (which is why a lot of those white supremacist groups combine the Confederate flag and the Hakenkreuz symbol of the Nazis). Either choice: the CSA or the Neo-Nazis is not even close to desirable.
