You know, I find that a lot of shows have that problem. For a couple of seasons they start out as mostly "____ of the week" (monster, case, patient, whatever) with only minimal overarcing storylines. If they're sucessful, they always become more "serious" later on and they introduce more drama and/or bigger plots that last longer.
Supernatural definitely did that. The example I usually come up with is Xena, which jumped the shark in later seasons when it became about killing all the Olympian gods and Eve's special destiny or whatever. How that change works for viewers depends a lot on their personal interests - Xena didn't really work for me but I liked season four of Supernatural well enough (haven't seen season five yet).
