Aquaman visits a silly future

This is from a 1971 reprint, and it's good to see Ramona Fradon get a credit line. Her distinctive art was always clean and attractive, with just enough of the cartoony aspect to make it fun. There is just so much implausible about this 1958 yarn that I suppose modern chroniclers would have to categorize it as some sort of hallucination Aquaman ( Read more... )

i'd love to read a book on the history of all the DC editors of the 60's.

ramona fradon, for me, equals Metamorpho. kinda like ogden whitney and Herbie. kurt schaffenberger drawing Herbie may be technically better, but whitney was more at home -just suited Herbie better. when i think of Aquaman, i think nick cardy. not that his contribution was notable -per se' -i just never saw any better. he was better off doing Bat Lash though, to me.

the whole king of the sea thing was for me better done by the buscema Namor. the idea of wearing a full costume as king of the sea always jarred me. it was just weird and something that caught my attention. it's just more fun to swim in trunks. and yeah, they're fish out of water in other (group) circumstances. really, the sea environment was never exploited well for either Aquaman or Namor. so much could have been made of the depths and all their unexplored mysteries. the telepathy with fish thing -sheesh, what a sideshow... actually, kevin costner in Water World comes to mind as the best of the

From what I've read they did consider an Subby TV show back in the early 50s.

Also from what I've read recently Aquaman is doing be than ever in the history of the character with the new version's last issue selling more, after reprints than half a dozen of Marvel's best sellers combined!

At present that have him in an extended clash with what are pretty obviously Lovecraft's Deep-ones.

hey, that's right.
wonder if it'll ever happen.
namor never really had a classic nemesis, imho. at least not back in the silver age when i was reading buscema's run on it i mean, Tiger Shark really seemed like a fill-in. as primal as the sea is, a supernatural nemesis (son of neptune?) seemed called for. the whole society and history of atlantis was uber ripe for embellishment, but they just wouldn't bother. in many, marvel's most neglected character. pity.

speaking of supernatural and renegade characters for cinema; doc strange. now there's a broad canvas...
hm, and if they let his hair be completely white by now... -and give him a long beard... -stephen strange could be the new Ancient One. and pass on the torch... what with what can be done CG in films these days, the mind boggles. that goes for namor too, f'sure.

I've never understood how Aquaman could perform a jackknife dive or even bend over to pick something up without stabbing himself in the belly with that belt buckle.
