Novum Eboracum lays waiting for them, hidden in the Lake of Smoke.
Sounds like, even underwater, New York still has a pollution problem. :) I have an idea that it ought to be Eboracum Novum, though, as if my faint memories of the Latin that I did at school are to be relied then on the adjective normally follows the noun.
The last time I was in Manhattan (two years ago? three?, it had cleaned up enormously since the 1970s. My asthma did not act up even with all the hiking I did down by the Garment District and up toward 59th. My feet did hurt, though. Even the Hudson River didn't look bad. Almost no litter on the street, no foul odors in doorways. This was Times Square, of course, not the South Bronx.
Now, Newburgh NY... dang. A little bit of Mordor that wandered in.
There's some good new for you, then. In the 1990s, Philip Jose Farmer wrote ESCAPE FROM LOKI (all original) and Will Murray did seven new Doc novels based on outlines or discarded bits from Lester Dent.
The ones I've read have been great but, unfortunately, just too long for me to enjoy. I still haven't gotten more than a bit into the King Kong crossover, and it bothers me that there are now genuine authorized Doc Savage novels I'm not reading...
So that's what those funny little critters are in that other post! (Link goes to pics of baby manta rays.) Thanks for the names though. I look forward to finding new titles.
Yay, Doc. Long may you wave.pronkerOctober 28 2015, 00:00:58 UTC
this was the reality of publishing at the time; you'd never make money today issuing mass-market 120-page Doc paperbacks as Bantam did in the 1960s. This is why I enjoy fanfiction, because the gems among all the unfinished, lame stories shine as well-crafted short stories or novellas. It sure takes a while to find them, though.
I recently read a profic Star Wars novel and it had good parts, but yes, it was right around 300 p.
"can an American citizen hold a title of royalty?"
Yep. The Constitution forbids employees of the federal government from accepting such honors, but it's ok for the rest of us. (Of course, any so-honored American who seriously expects his fellow citizens to address him as Sir Fred or Lord Elmo is in for a rude awakening.)
As a long time reader of this blog, I always read your Doc reviews with great interest, but I never comment on them. I'd like to thank you for your efforts. I was one of those guys that sent off for the Doc Savage poster from a card in the center of one of the adventures (Help buy Doc Savage a new Shirt! $1.00) and had it on my wall all through college. I've recently gotten a pretty complete run of the e-books, including Murray's, and your reviews are a great help in deciding what to read next. Thanks!
Glad to hear from you! I've been a Doc Savage fan nearly all my life. When I was eleven, I bought Bantam's BRAND OF THE WEREWOLF because it had the Wolf Man on it. To my surprise, there was no real werewolf but I had met the Man of Bronze and his friends, and I've been hooked ever since.

Then, in 2011, Will Murray started still ANOTHER new series for Altus Press! https://www.google.com/search?q=baby+manta+rays&rlz=1C1AVNE_enUS664&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=623&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0CAYQ_AUoAWoVChMIvb7gpsjlyAIVxWk-Ch29yAK7\

Altus is a small publisher and I found Barnes & Nobel doesn't carry their titles, so I had to send away for the books directly.
