He was in China, where he died at a youthful age and his murder was covered-up. This led to the founding of the group that bears his name.

I did not know until recently that he was a missionary.

From what little I've read about Birch himself and the JBS, you have a point.

It reminds me of Buddha telling people not to worship idols and to think for themselves, and soon after he died, there were idols of him.
