Yukon only appeared just the once. If it was meant to test the idea of another assistant, the idea didn't go any better than the Gold Ogre gang had back in May 1939.
For what it may be worth, the word "Yukon" appears 113 times in "Fire & Ice" (Jul 1946), twice each in "Mystery on the Snow" (May 1934) & "Murder Melody" (Nov 1935) and once each in "Land of Always Night" (Mar 1935) & "Three Devils" (May 1944).
I would have liked to see a few different assistants pop up for a few stories in the late 1940s book. Just for a change. Several of the surrogate heroes who carried the first half of a story while Doc was working undercover could have returned. I particularly liked Retta Ken in THE ROAR DEVIL.
Of course, I grew tired of Monk and Ham and would have preferred to have the other aides fill in more often, but I guess the readers liked those two.
Great review as usual Doc. Your mention of this Yukon character made me curious so I looked out on Amazon to see if a used omnibus w Fire and Ice was still available or to see if it was reprinted in the Nostalgia Ventures series yet… No luck, but one can buy the original Street & Smith pulp for $65.00 (!)…Too rich for by blood, I’ll wait for the NV reprint. - best, Rich M
