Library Book

I sit cross-legged on my bed. So proud of the new, dark hair on my upper legs and belly. Is it my bed, now, just mine? It's weird not being sure whether someone lives with you anymore. The window is open and I hear rain on metal, steady and soothing. It's warm, so there are only four cats on the bed. I've actually gotten a lot done the last couple ( Read more... )

I have that high school dream. It's always the end of the semester and I have a math final, and I have just realized that I have ditched class every single day.

Congrats on the new hair! :)

I get the highschool dream too. Generally I end up back there and am totally miffed as to why I have to be there, since I graduated years and years ago. Some douchebag ex-classmate usually informs me that we were all really sub-par students so we have to complete an additional year, at which point I scream "BUT I JUST GRADUATED COLLEGE! I HAVE A DEGREE!" and then I start breaking things and/or crying.

Yeah, they're a bit traumatic. I wouldn't wish the high-school anxiety dream on anyone.

Typically dreams like that mean you're carrying unresolved stress from your past.

Why do the Library Police force-feed red licorice to those that they apprehend? I think that would ruin the sodomizing for me, I hate licorice.

On the other hand, I might grow to enjoy the licorice instead...

I took out a book way back when I was a teenager, when I had a crush on Dylan Thomas....it was "Dylan Thomas: No Man More Magical". It had amazing photos of him in his lovely prime, and I ended up cutting one of the pictures out of the book. I knew that was wrong, but couldn't help myself. It took me twenty years before I was able to go back to that local library and get a new card (when I was absolutely sure they had gone over to a computer system, and unable to track my shameful act). By the way....love your Stephen King reference.

I'm a librarian and I want to assure you that as a librarian, it is my greatest joy to see someone take home a book. If they can use it, even better. If they can grow to love it, that's the best thing. But to do that, you have to take it home and read it. So do, read it. Libraries exist for the benefit of all - they enable an informed democracy, they are shared assets of the community to which you are a member. You are entitled, furthermore, to avail yourself of everything in your library (including a librarian's expertise and advice).

But mostly, seeing the books go out makes librarians happy. We put a lot of work into choosing those books, getting them on the shelf and talking them up. We anticipate and accept that a certain percentage of library books will be lost, stolen, dropped in the bathtub or come back sticky. We're okay with that. It's for the greater good.

I now have thirteen or fourteen UNO library books that are going to be due soon. I keep having nightmares about a $500 overdue fine, tempered by a dream of winning $600 at Harrah's.

I hope you're doing well. You and Chris are in my thoughts.
