Boring Entry w/Chihuahua

Thanks for all the short story votes. "Mussolini and the Axeman's Jazz" was the runaway winner (which made me happy, as I've always liked that story, especially since I visited my first St. Joseph altars while researching it), followed by "Self-Made Man." The latter story has already been online quite a bit, though, so I suggested the third runner- ( Read more... )

green goddess, gross stuff, st. joseph, gardening, short stories, are you loathsome tonight?, health

Glad to read you had a good weekend despite the threat of golden showers. Life is so often amazing between sentences.
My copy of "Are you Loathsome Tonight" (copyright 2000)does not have the afterword by Caitlin Kiernan but I enjoyed thumbing through the stories again to refresh the memory before voting. I voted for "Monday's Special" first b/c it's a Dr. Brite story after all but also the idea of someone being force-fed to death stayed w/ me long after reading the story. The who, what, where, why, and how of it sparked the ol' imagination again.
I assumed I'd get to vote twice since you needed two stories and discovered I couldn't vote again but my second choice was also 'Mussolini and the Axeman's Jazz.' I discovered I had underlined a sentence in the story that certainly speaks to politics of that time and still speaks to politics of today: 'The only reason he could be allowed into power was to prevent something far worse.'

I wanted to give each person two votes, but couldn't figure out how to do it in LJ poll.

No problem, I wasn't making a criticism about the votes. I don't know anything about doing LJ polls so you're doing a lot better than I am in that regard. My point of mentioning the 2nd vote was the quote from "Mussolini" that I had underlined when I read the book a few yrs back and how it is as appropriate today as it was then.

I hope you continue to have more spoons and less pain.

Just dropping by to tell you how much I love your gardening posts, and I'm hoping for pictures in the near future. I'm also very jealous of your ability to garden in April -- I'm stuck up here in Minnesota, where there's a good possibility of snow tonight.

I also have cherry tomatoes coming, but I eat them off the plant as fast as they can ripen. They make good little gardening snacks.

My husband's the same way. We used to grow them in pots on the driveway, and he would have them on the way to work every morning.

If they're available near you, get some SunSugar cherry tomatoes. A beautiful little golden-orange globe about the size of a large marble (what were those big marbles called? I can't recall...) Absolutely the best tomato I've ever had! My friend here who owns a garden center turned me on to them, and I've never looked back! The only problem they seem to have is that NONE of them make it to the salad/recipe they're meant for...they all pop straight into the waiting pie-hole!
