I'm going to spend the evening reading and go to bed early (fun things to do tomorrow if I only have the energy for them), but I wanted to make a note of the three books I picked up at Borders tonight:

40: A Doonesbury Retrospective by G.B. Trudeau. Couldn't really afford this massive slipcased compendium, but I somehow lost my old Doonesbury ( Read more... )

David Suzuki interviewed Margaret Atwood on his CBC radio show, The Bottom Line, and she mentions a Victorian anthology called "Little Graves" about dead children... she mentions it in the context of our mostly not being around death, and familiar with death any longer in our society. The whole interview is amazing, I've listened to it over and over.

If you love doctor anecdotes, Mr. B, you're going to love this thread on a student doctor forum.

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=257985

It's titled "Things I Learned From My Patients", and ... is all about the incredibly awful, hilarious, amazing things you learn about other humans when you're a physician. A lot of the stories come from ER physicians and other such staff.

It's at once an incredible human trainwreck and utterly hilarious and totally awe-inspiring for the kind of BS physicians have to put up with in their line of work, and if you love gory medical anecdotes I think you should bookmark this thread and read it in batches. (:

I'm reading "Weekend at Bellevue" this minute --
don't know why I love these train-wreck medical
memoirs, but I do.

I also have the Doonesbury paperbacks in a box
in my mother's basement, including the one with
the original Yale strips, which is called "A
French Major from the Bronx" or something like
that. I loved reading them. I'll have to beg
for the boxset for Christmas.

I have always been fascinated by the exploits of polar explorers. I think you would like "Shackleton's Boat Journey" by F.A. Worsley. A thrilling read, highly recommend.

Shackleton is one of my heroes! Not sure if I've read that one; will check my polar library.
