I meant to post about this earlier, and right now I feel like reading my book (Sir Vidia's Shadow by Paul Theroux, AGAIN), but I'm getting sleepy and Chris is off for the next two days and if I don't do it now it won't get done.

This articleNo, I don't know what's up with the LOLcat headline either, but this article makes me despair. (And plan ( Read more... )

I met Nancy Kulp briefly in 1982. She struck me as a woman of considerable intelligence and grace. It is indeed a shame that most Americans only know her as Miss Hathaway.

I never saw anything of her outside that role, but she always struck me as a good and thoughtful actor. Interestingly I think she pinged my queerdar enough that I wondered, too - but I was never sure how much of that came from the role, and how much from the woman behind the role. She always carried herself well, but not in a way that was typically "feminine" for the day.

Of course I'm now imagining Miss Hathaway in a private club somewhere with a glass of scotch, doting on a winsome young lady, and in my mind's eye she seems quite happy there :-)

Yes, this is a great time to visit New Orleans and nearby region, in pretty much every way except for going to the beach (though there are still some open non-oiled beaches in the area on that last point). This area has a long tradition of catering to visitors. Many people are avoiding the whole Gulf region because of the spill, so you might find lighter crowds and maybe some good deals.

I'm sorry, did you just say forbidden to wear respirators?!?

I know this is a horrific situation on many levels, but that is so willfully um...ghastly.

Ghastly sums it up. I mean, for Christ's sake, they're burning sea turtles now.

Well, vajra beat me to it on the French Laundry front. Doesn't mean another of Keller's Yountville restaurants made the snub, but probably not likely? Not sure -- how much clout do chefs de cuisine have?
