Mmmm, rain...

I *do* use an umbrella, but for oddly similar reasons. I love the rain and the poncho made me feel enclosed and sort of smothered. With the umbrella more of my skin was exposed to the humidity and I could reach out from underneath and feel the rain directly on my arms or face. The sound of rain is very appealing to me too, and the swishing sound of the poncho as I moved (sleeve brushing against body, etc) seemed to compete.

I really like the essay though. Rain makes me happy. I notice it's all in past tense though - do you still walk in the rain? Everyone should!

Although I do still walk in the rain, the poncho has been replaced by a leather trenchcoat and Australian rider's hat. The rain isn't quite as much fun, but the scaring hell out of people more than makes up for it.

A brave man doesn't mind the weather, but a wise man knows when to come in, out of the rain.
