[Upcoming Film] Detective Dee
Click to viewThe upcoming film Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame looks like it could be interesting based on this nifty trailer.
Set in 7th Century China, it features a fictionalized event in the life of the the famous Chinese Tang Dynasty official Di Renji.
"Detective Dee" is incidentally same person who was featured in a series of detective novels loosely based on Di Renji which were written by the Dutch diplomat Robert Van Gulik, only van Gulik changed the name to the more conventional and Westernized name "Judge Dee".
It does seem, however, that the Judge/Detective Dee is much more...um...energetic in this film than he was depicted in the classic mystery stories, somewhat similar to how Holmes was depicted in the 2009 film version "Sherlock Holmes".
