I'd leave the possibility of sentience open.

Regardless--If you'd like, I have a fairly complete record of locations and years residents were taken from. The more minds working on this the better.

[Mark also has names, and a few personal profiles, but he's not going to share those with a stranger.]

It is a weird meta thing you might enjoy. I will hit you up on AIM about it. paper_knight July 22 2011, 17:01:27 UTC
No, of course not.

[His voice has gone a little abstracted. This is a new problem.]

It's not just one book. There's The Hound of the Baskervilles and...some other novels. And the short stories, that's--

[He shuts his eyes, trying to remember.]

The Adventures, The Casebook, The Memoirs... There are more. And there were some films, when I was growing up.

[Sherlock is a little surprised.]

It would be safe to assume that in your world the character Sherlock Holmes is... well known?

Extremely. Anyone would know the name.

Genius intellect? Deductive mastermind? Violinist?

[No, we're not familiar with humility]

That's about the size of it. He's something of a cliche.

[The hairs on the back of Sherlock's neck raise.]

You know John as well? Is he in these books?

This becomes more and more impossible the more I hear.

Well...

[He shifts his weight back and forth, thinking.]

There are people here who resemble Lewis Carrol's characters. Like and unlike, the same way Wonderland is like and unlike the story. Is it really so impossible that you and the fictional Holmes might share a name?

If it was name alone then it would be coincident, maybe even motive. But no.. the more I hear the more I have to wonder....

[He is thinking very hard.]

You haven't read the stories yet, right? So you're still missing some facts. I wouldn't worry too much until I had more points to compare.

[Said in a calming tone. Sure, Sherlock is a little rude, but it's upsetting when Wonderland throws you a curveball.]

I'm not worried. I'm intrigued. This presents a completely impossible likelihood... I have a lot of reading to do.

I'll let you get to it, then.
This is something new for me, too--I'd be interested in your conclusions.
