1: I never used to, but am finding that I feel it's far more polite than just leaving folks hanging- and they know that I'll come back to them (see last question I asked, indeed!). I'd call it polite, but not necessity. I like mr_negotiator's viewpoint on this one- however, it calls a question to my mind. If I am going to be around but slow, should I wait until I'm going to be around and not slow, or is it reasonable to tack on a 'I'm here but I'm slooow' comment, in your view oh modly one?
2: you're correct in assuming that self-intro posts aren't necessary; if you want to do more than one in one post, I doubt anyone's going to mind. :)
I think just noting "responses may be slow" is sufficient, as long as it's not going to be, say, eight to ten hours before you get back to people after you post.
"(( posting, going to sleep now, will respond when I wake up ))" is probably a bit out of line.
Personally I don't give two shits in a tin can if someone's actively responding to tags or not. No one's going to die if you don't tag them back right away or at all.
