As of yesterday, for some reason as yet unknown to me, whenever I try browsing on certain sites, the top level domain gets ignored

I haven't experienced that, but why not try downloading Firefox again or try another browser like Opera? I don't know if this suggestion helps though. :P

Sounds almost like it could be a DNS issue...

Hm, I don't think a DNS issue would cause half the URL to disintegrate like that. Check your proxy settings.
