Aw thank you! I liked the happy ending twist I did in this story -- in how I gave a reasoning behind old!Merlin's grimness in that present day ending. Who knows...Arthur could have managed to get in touch with him one hundred or so years after he had died.

I would love for that to happen - the thought that Merlin has to wait hundreds (maybe thousands) of years without any sort of contact till Arthur returns is hard to bear!
(Of course, the finale left all that "in between time" open for interpretation so we can just assume what we want, really :3 )

I agree. Poor Merlin has been through enough in the series after all.

Yes, it did leave that in between time, so I couldn't help but take advantage of that. There could be the chance that Arthur found a way to reach out to Merlin before the present day ending. Even if Merlin couldn't see him and could only hear his voice, it was better than nothing. And I felt a hundred years of mourning for Merlin was enough for him before Arthur petitioned to Freya to contact Merlin.

I'd like to believe that Merlin had his moments of happiness during the wait for Arthur...it's just that the show decided to choose a scene where he's looking grim and unhappy in that present day ending -- keeping it within the tragedy of the situation. But I'd like to be optimistic and believe that Merlin wasn't that unhappy every single day since Arthur died.
